Positive User (formerly User.com) Automations: Automatic Name Grammatical Declension & Gender Detection

Personalizing email campaigns goes far beyond inserting a generic first-name merge tag. In languages with grammatical case declension (such as Polish, Czech, and Slavic languages), addressing someone by their nominative form sounds unnatural and robotic.

In English, "Hi Michael" or "Hi Anna" uses the base name. In Polish, natural greetings require the vocative case ("Cześć Michale!", "Dzień dobry Anno!"). Because contact forms capture names in the nominative ("Michał", "Anna"), marketers need automated mechanisms to handle declension seamlessly.

The Technical Workflow in Positive User (User.com)

Using Positive User's flexible automation canvas, custom attributes, and webhook listeners, you can automate this process in real time upon contact registration:

1. Establishing Custom Attributes

Create two custom user attributes in Positive User:

  • vocative_name (string): Holds the declined greeting form of the first name.
  • gender (string): Holds the detected gender ("female", "male", or "unknown").

2. Gender Detection Logic

In Polish naming conventions, the overwhelming majority of female names end in the letter "a" (Anna, Maria, Katarzyna), with very few exceptions. A simple conditional script or API lookup can evaluate the final character of the trimmed first name to assign gender with high statistical accuracy.

3. API-Driven Declension via Webhooks

For grammatically flawless vocative forms, trigger an automated webhook module in Positive User that passes the raw name to a linguistic microservice or lookup database, returning the proper vocative form and saving it back into the user profile.

The Commercial Impact of Thoughtful Personalization

Addressing prospective customers naturally in their native grammatical form signals meticulous attention to detail, builds immediate trust, and measurably increases email open-to-click rates across onboarding and nurturing sequences.
